UAE media have reported cases in which cruise control did not disengage as expected. That is uncommon, yet it is a useful reminder: treat these systems as a driving aid, not a substitute for control of the vehicle.
Before switching cruise control on, look at the dashboard. If a check-engine, ABS, traction or stability warning is lit, the system may not behave as designed. In that case, have the vehicle inspected and avoid using cruise control until the warning is investigated.
Adaptive cruise control relies on radar, cameras and other sensors. Dirt, dust and film on those sensors can cause the system to drop out or behave unpredictably. Keep the front of the vehicle clean, especially after dusty driving, and book a diagnostic check if the system disengages without reason.
If cruise control will not switch off
Stay calm and keep both hands on the steering wheel. Use the brake pedal, which should cancel cruise control on most vehicles. If it does not, shift to neutral if it is safe to do so, switch the system off at the control, and bring the car to a controlled stop.
Move out of live traffic when you can do so safely, switch on hazard lights, and contact roadside assistance or the police if you cannot stop the vehicle yourself. Do not keep driving with a driver-assistance fault.
